Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah |
The Istana Nurul Iman palace is the Sultan’s official residence which houses government ministries as well as the royal family, has 1799 rooms, domes with gold leaf, 800-car garage, and tens of record-setting interior things. Its cost has been estimated at between $300-$600 million. It is considered as the biggest palace in the world and is much bigger than the iconic Vatican palace. His current assets, which officially belong to the country, are believed to be around $40 billion. If his holdings continue to grow at present rates, his eldest son will almost become the world's first trillionaire.
During 1997-98 Asian currency crisis, Sultan took an aggressively visible role in supporting other ASEAN member countries by increasing investments in Malaysia and offering significant aid to Thailand and Indonesia.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has married three times and has 12 children. Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Sultan's eldest son, is the heir to the throne.
